lyrics

Emily-Anne and I in over our heads
Stacking the brush up twenty feet high
Dirt on her nose and a rip in her shirt
And in a field we're starting a fire

She swears the summer sings
And I'm not listening for the refrain
But I'm done with choruses
And I'm looking for a note to sustain

Chop down that tree and turn it into lumber
And then burn those leaves and close your eyes
I'm in between, it's coming
But the summer isn't over yet
There's still some time

Rumble of thunder in the mid-afternoon
And it starts to rain round quarter to five
Emily-Anne is holding onto my hand
She doesn't see the smoke in the sky

Under the evergreen
The sky from underneath is greener than blue
Sunbeam between her knees
And I didn't know if she was telling the truth
But now I do

Emily-Anne and I in spite of the time
Creeping up on our strawberry fields
Almost explain away the missteps we made
In an attempt to make it seem real
Emily-Anne I know it was real

She swears the summer sings
And I'm not listening for the refrain
But I'm done with choruses
And I tell her she's my note to sustain
And I can stay

Chop down that tree and turn it into lumber
And then burn those leaves and close your eyes
I'm in between, it's coming
But the summer isn't over yet
There's still some time
